Dental implants are the most advanced tooth replacement solution modern dentistry offers — and also one of the most misunderstood. Despite decades of clinical evidence and millions of successful placements, a set of persistent myths continues to prevent patients in Lodi and the greater Stockton area from pursuing a treatment that could genuinely transform their oral health and quality of life.
At Modern Dental & Implants, dental implant placement and restoration is one of our core specialties. Dr. Ben Udas and Dr. Mohammad Ahmed — who specializes specifically in full mouth reconstruction and implant-supported restorations — work with implant patients at every stage, from initial evaluation through final restoration. They hear these myths regularly. Here, they set the record straight.
Myth: Dental implants are too painful to be worth it.
Fact: This is the most common concern patients bring to their implant consultation, and it consistently reflects outdated or second-hand information rather than direct experience. Implant placement is performed under local anesthesia, and most patients report that the procedure itself is far less uncomfortable than they anticipated — often comparing it favorably to a tooth extraction. Post-operative soreness is typically managed well with over-the-counter pain medication and resolves within a few days. Patients who have experienced both an extraction and an implant placement routinely describe the implant procedure as easier. The integration period that follows — as the titanium post bonds with the jawbone — involves no ongoing pain and requires no special management.
Myth: Dental implants are only for older adults.
Fact: Implants are appropriate for adults of virtually any age once jawbone development is complete — typically in the late teens or early twenties. In fact, younger adults who lose teeth to injury, decay, or disease often benefit the most from early implant placement, because the bone loss that follows tooth extraction is progressive and accelerates over time. Acting earlier preserves more bone and simplifies the implant process. We regularly place implants for patients in their twenties, thirties, and forties — people who don’t want to spend the next fifty years managing the consequences of an untreated gap.
Myth: I don’t have enough bone for implants.
Fact: Many patients who’ve been told they “don’t have enough bone” elsewhere have more options than they realize. It’s true that adequate bone density and volume are required to support an implant post — but bone loss that has already occurred can often be addressed through bone grafting procedures that rebuild the implant site before or at the time of placement. Modern grafting materials and techniques have made this a routine part of implant treatment planning. The only way to know whether your bone anatomy supports implants — with or without grafting — is through a proper evaluation with 3D cone beam imaging, which we use at Modern Dental & Implants to assess each patient’s specific anatomy.
Myth: Implants require too much maintenance.
Fact: Of all the tooth replacement options available — bridges, partial dentures, full dentures — implants require the least specialized maintenance. There are no adhesives, no nightly soaking, no special cleaning systems. You brush, floss, and have regular professional cleanings, just as you would with natural teeth. The implant post itself is titanium and does not decay. The crown placed on top is subject to normal wear over time, but with good hygiene and regular dental visits, implant restorations routinely last fifteen to twenty-five years or longer. Patients who find denture maintenance burdensome often describe the transition to implants as a significant quality-of-life improvement.
Myth: Implants look fake or obviously dental.
Fact: A well-placed, well-restored implant is indistinguishable from a natural tooth in function and appearance. The crown that sits atop the implant is custom-fabricated to match the color, shape, and translucency of your surrounding teeth. The result is a restoration that integrates naturally into your smile — not something that announces itself as a replacement. Patients who were self-conscious about the appearance of a denture or a visible gap are frequently surprised by how natural their implant restoration looks in photographs and in daily life.
Myth: Implants are too expensive.
Fact: The upfront cost of dental implant treatment is higher than other replacement options — and that’s a legitimate consideration worth discussing directly. But comparing implant cost to the cost of a bridge or denture without considering the full lifecycle misrepresents the true economics. Bridges require the removal of structure from healthy adjacent teeth and typically need replacement every ten to fifteen years. Dentures require periodic relining, eventual replacement, and may accelerate the bone loss that complicates future treatment. An implant, by contrast, preserves the adjacent teeth, maintains jawbone density, and is designed to be a one-time solution. Over a twenty or thirty year horizon, implants are frequently the most cost-effective option — in addition to being the most functional and comfortable. At Modern Dental & Implants, we discuss financing options and insurance benefits during every implant consultation so that cost doesn’t prevent patients from making the best decision for their health.
Myth: Implants frequently fail.
Fact: Dental implants have one of the highest long-term success rates of any implanted medical device. Studies consistently report success rates above 95% at ten years. The factors most strongly associated with implant failure — uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, severe bone deficiency, and poor post-operative hygiene — are identifiable during the evaluation process. Patients who are good candidates, treated by experienced providers with appropriate technique, and committed to proper maintenance enjoy outcomes that are overwhelmingly positive. During your consultation with Dr. Udas or Dr. Ahmed, we’ll assess your candidacy honestly and discuss any factors that might affect your outcome — so you can make a fully informed decision.
Myth: I can wait until the gap bothers me more.
Fact: This is perhaps the most consequential myth on this list, because the consequences of waiting are real and cumulative. Within weeks of a tooth extraction, the jawbone at the site begins resorbing — shrinking in both height and width — because it no longer receives the stimulation that chewing through a tooth root provides. After a year, the bone loss can be significant enough to require grafting. After several years, it may be substantial enough to complicate placement considerably. Meanwhile, adjacent teeth begin to tilt toward the gap, and the opposing tooth begins to erupt downward or upward, altering the bite relationship. None of these changes are immediately noticeable, which is exactly what makes them easy to defer — until they aren’t.
The best time to pursue an implant consultation is as soon as possible after a tooth is lost or identified as needing extraction.
